Why Silence Might Be the Best Trail Partner You've Never Tried
“When you go out there you don’t get away from it all - you get back to it all.
You come home to what’s important, you come home to yourself.”
What if the most powerful part of your next hike... was the silence?
In the next few weeks, I’m hiking Tasmania’s legendary South Coast Track.
Raw. Remote. Wild.
No roads. No reception.
Just me, nature, and silence.
What I’m craving most?
The stillness.
The kind of silence that feels full, not empty.
Waves, wind, birdsong... and breath.
Silence on the trail isn’t about escape.
It’s about coming home.

Why You Should Try Hiking in Silence
Nature feels louder
When you’re quiet, you start to hear. The wind in the trees, the crunch of boots, the distant call of birds. It’s not silence. It’s symphony.
You find mental clarity
No music. No small talk. Just breath, movement, space. It’s like walking meditation.
Wildlife comes closer
Quiet hikers blend in. You’ll see more, hear more, feel more. Nature trusts silence.
It deepens group hikes too
Try a “quiet kilometer (or mile)” with friends. No words, just presence. When the silence ends, conversations feel deeper.
Try This: The Silent Sunrise Hike
Pick a walk you know well.
Start before sunrise.
Leave your headphones behind.
Walk slowly.
Breathe deeply.
Notice everything.
I walk around 9km every day, often with my headphones in. But I often have to stop myself to take out the earpods and walk with my thoughts. In silence. It’s rejuvenating. Give it a try!
