TIPS FOR FINDING THE PERFECT LOCATION FOR YOUR NEXT ADVENTURE

Top Tips for Selecting the Perfect Location for Your Next Hiking Adventure

Choosing the right location for your next multi-day hiking adventure is one of the most important steps in planning a successful and memorable trip. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or new to multi-day treks, the right location can make all the difference in your experience. In this post, I’m sharing my top tips for selecting the perfect hiking destination AND I’ll give you some free resources to help you plan your next great adventure.

1. Consider Your Experience Level

The first step in selecting a hiking location is to assess your own experience and fitness level. If you’re new to multi-day hikes, it’s best to start with a shorter, well-established trail that matches your skills. For more seasoned hikers, remote or challenging locations can offer the thrill and solitude you’re seeking but will potentially require significantly more planning and preparation.

2. Define Your Goals for the Hike

What do you want to get out of your hike? Are you looking for breathtaking views, a physical challenge, or perhaps a just a bit of time away from the daily grind? Defining your goals will help narrow down your location options. Some tracks and trails are known for their scenic beauty, while others are prized for the physical challenge they present.

3. Research the Terrain and Climate

Understanding the terrain and climate of your potential hiking location is crucial. Some trails may be more challenging due to steep inclines, rocky sections, or unpredictable weather. Ensure you’re prepared for the conditions you’ll face and pack appropriately.

4. Evaluate Accessibility and Logistics

Consider how easy it is to get to and from your hiking location. Some trails may require booking, special permits and transportation arrangements. Planning these logistics in advance can save you a lot of headaches later on. We often see errors in this process on Tasmania’s Overland Track where walkers have not arranged a ferry booking for the end of their walk and they are either forced to walk the additional 20km around the lake OR wait an extra night for space on a boat.

5. Check for Necessary Permits and Regulations

Many popular hiking destinations require booking, especially for overnight camping. These can often be booked out months ahead. Be sure to check the regulations for your chosen location well in advance. This is also a good time to familiarise yourself with any environmental protection guidelines that may also be in place (e.g. if carrying a ‘poo tube’ is required).

6. Plan for Safety

Safety should always be your top priority when selecting a hiking location. Consider the remoteness of the area, the potential for wildlife encounters, and the difficulty of the track. Make sure you have a plan for emergencies, including how to contact help if needed and any potential early exit routes along the way. Ideally, and especially if solo or in remote areas, you want to have a form of satellite communication that will enable your loved ones to stay in touch and track your location. All too often we see search and rescue looking for missing walkers based on ‘best guesses’ of where the missing person may be. Having an effective communication strategy greatly assists in the event of a mishap.

FREE STUFF!

To help you choose the perfect hiking location and prepare for your adventure, here are a few FREE resources that I have created:

1. Destination Comparison Worksheet: Download my handy worksheet that allows you to compare multiple hiking destinations based on key factors like terrain, climate, accessibility, and more. This will help you make an informed decision on where to hike next. It’s also a great way to build up a database of potential future walks you are interested in! Access it here.

2. Meal Planner and customisable Hiking Itinerary Template: The meal planner is a spreadsheet tool to assist in planning food and meals for a multi-day hike. The trip itinerary template will help you organise your hike, plan your route, and share your itinerary with others. Access them here.

3. Packing Checklist: These days I tend to use online tools like Lighterpack or Packwizard, but you prefer to print out a good old fashioned check list then my basic packing checklists (day hike and multi-day) will help to ensure you have everything you need for a safe and enjoyable hike. Access it here.

These resources are designed to help you plan for your future hiking adventures, whether you’re exploring well-known trails or seeking out hidden gems anywhere around the world. Enjoy!

Interesting thing related to hiking 🏃‍♂️

  • Iceland is one of those places very high on my list of ‘places to visit’

  • Hunter Leininger from the USA broke the Iceland North-South FKT (fastest known time), completing the 515 km (320 mile) traverse in 6 days, 13 hours.

  • He faced challenges such as limited food (he didn’t pack enough), harsh weather, and injury.

  • He finished 46 hours faster than the previous record.
