HIKING GIFTS - PERFECT GIFTS FOR ANY TRAIL LOVER

I have to admit, the whole Black Friday and Cyber Monday frenzy can be overwhelming. That's why I chose not to flood your inbox with a barrage of special deals last week. I stick to sending just one email a week, and I think that's plenty. However, amidst all the sales chaos, I received quite a few questions about what's on my wish list or what I'd recommend for a friend or loved one. So, I decided to create a list for you!

If you’re stuck on what to gift the hiker in your life (or yourself - go on, you deserve it), I’ve got you covered! This curated list includes a few items that will elevate any outdoor adventure.

These are all items I own and find useful and are probably items a lot of hikers don’t yet have. They are practical, innovative, and guaranteed to impress even the most seasoned hikers. Let’s jump straight in…

  1. Waterproof Playing Cards
Rainy days in the tent just got better! These cards are fully waterproof, durable, and packable. Perfect for cosy downtime on the trail. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been stuck in my tent on a rainy day, staring at the ceiling, wishing I had something to do. These cards are a lifesaver—whether you’re playing a quick game by the river or passing the time during an unexpected weather delay. I used to always carry regular cards but these ones are great and will last for many years to come.
Why they’ll love it: Endless fun that fits in their pocket! Check them out here

  2. Nitecore MT1A Pro Flashlight
This compact powerhouse boasts 800 lumens, a beam that reaches up to 250m, and dual power options (AA or the included rechargeable battery). Perfect for night hikes or campsite safety. I took this torch on a recent Rogaining event, and it was a game-changer. Its powerful beam lit up tricky trails, making navigation in pitch-black conditions much easier.

Plus, it’s lightweight, so you hardly notice it in your pack or clipped to your belt. I even use it on evening walks around the neighbourhood—it’s that versatile.
Why they’ll love it: It’s so small, lightweight and versatile, it’s a lifesaver on dark trails. I love this thing. Check it out here.

  3. Flextail Zero Pump
Inflate a sleeping pad in seconds after a long day. Weighing just 34g, this little gadget makes camp setup a breeze. On a nine-day hike earlier this year, this pump became my secret weapon. While my hiking mates were busy huffing and puffing, I was already relaxing with a warm drink, my mat perfectly inflated. Its compact size makes it easy to throw in your pack, and the battery lasts long enough to inflate multiple mats every night. It’s one of those pieces of gear you didn’t know you needed until you try it, and then you can’t live without it. On that hike we inflasted 2 mats every day for 9 days and the battery was still going strong.
Why they’ll love it: No more huffing and puffing—just push a button and relax and make yourself a cup of tea. Check it out here

  4. The North Face Summit FUTUREFLEECE Hoodie
This lightweight mid-layer combines warmth, breathability, and durability in one sleek package. Ideal for cold mornings on the trail or high-altitude treks. I’ve worn this hoodie on every walk I’ve done over the past year, and it’s never let me down. It keeps me warm on those cold starts and I can keep it on for most of the morning without overheating. I absolutely love it. The unique fabric balances warmth and weight perfectly, and its durability stood up to the rigours of scrub-filled trails although I wouldn’t deliberately subject it to really rough conditions. It’s my go-to layer for multi-day hikes and even casual outdoor outings—it’s that comfortable and versatile.
Why they’ll love it: A second-skin feel that balances warmth and weight perfectly. Check it out here.

Absolutely loving my North Face Future Fleece on a cold summit during Tasmanian winter.

  5. Field Notes Expedition Notepad
For jotting down trail notes, sketches, or ideas, this virtually indestructible notebook is a perfect companion. Its waterproof and tear proof design stands up to any outdoor challenge. I carry mine on every hike, and it’s helped me capture everything from gear lists to spontaneous trail ideas for my YouTube channel. Last winter, on a wet and windy Overland Track trek, it survived a complete soaking when I left it outside on the deck without losing a single note. It really is a cool little notebook. If you’re the type who loves documenting adventures or keeping important details handy, this notepad is worth its weight in gold. I also use it for Rogaining racing. I normally use a pencil or a fine tipped sharpie to write in it. I also keep one in my day pack that I carry to work every day.
Why they’ll love it: A blend of durability and function, it’s ideal for documenting their adventures. Get yours here.

  6. Nitecore NB10000 Gen 3 Power Bank

Staying connected on the trail is crucial, and the Nitecore NB10000 Gen 3 ensures your devices remain charged without adding significant weight to your pack. This ultra-slim power bank offers a 10,000mAh capacity, providing ample power for multiple device charges. Its carbon fiber frame keeps it lightweight and durable, perfect for rugged conditions. I have been using this regularly for a couple of months. It is so slim and lightweight that you barely notice it in your pocket. In fact, I love it so much that I went ahead and bought it’s big brother the NB20000 Gen 3.

Why they’ll love it: Lightweight, weather-resistant, and just a really nice slim design. Get yours here.

  7. Zenbivy Sleeping System

Now, this is one of those ‘treat yourself’ items. The Zenbivy Light Bed is a versatile sleep system that combines the warmth of a sleeping bag with the freedom of a quilt. Its two-piece design includes a fitted sheet and a zippered quilt, allowing for multiple configurations to suit various sleeping styles. I’ve found it particularly comfortable during the nights I have tested it so far, as it accommodates side sleeping and movement without causing drafts. It is a little heavier but I think I’m prepared to carry the extra weight of this for the level of comfort it offers.

Why they'll love it: This system offers a customisable and comfortable sleeping experience, making it ideal for those who value a good night's rest in the backcountry. Get yours here.

  8. Silverlight Hiking Socks

Silverlight hiking socks are crafted with a blend of New Zealand merino wool and silver-coated yarns, offering unparalleled comfort and durability. These have been my go to socks for hiking (and just general wear) for the last couple of years. The silver fibres provide antimicrobial properties, keeping feet odour-free even after long days on the trail. Their seamless design and light compression ensure a snug fit, reducing the risk of blisters.

Why they'll love it: These socks combine comfort, durability, and odor resistance, making them an essential addition to any hiker's gear. Get yours here.

Good socks come in very handy on days like these….

  9. Patagonia Airshed Cap

This Cap is my go-to piece of headwear for pretty much any outdoor activity. I love the feel and design of this and I would have to say, it’s probalby the best cap I’ve had. The brim is made from 100% recycled fishing nets (not that you would know). Whether I'm trail running or hiking, or delivering a YouTube video, this cap offers reliable performance and eco-friendly materials and lasts for years. I now own several! Get yours here.

  10. While we’re talking Patagonia

Instead of succumbing to the allure of cheap, disposable gear this Black Friday, consider what Patagonia has to say. They've long championed the idea of buying only what you need and investing in quality products that stand the test of time. I've been using their gear for years, and its durability and performance have consistently impressed me. I still own every single Patagonia product I have ever purchased. By choosing well-made items, we not only get better value but also contribute to a more sustainable planet. See their message here.

🎄 Pro Tip: Include a thoughtful note about why you chose the gift—it adds a personal touch hikers will appreciate!
