Master the Forecast: Hike Safely in Any Weather

Don’t Let the Weather Win—Plan Smarter for Your Next Hike
Ever headed out on a hike only to find the trail is closed, or the weather turns from sunny to stormy in minutes? I’ve been there. But after 34+ years of hiking, one lesson has stuck with me: Planning is everything.
Whether it’s a gentle stroll or a multi-day adventure, checking track conditions and weather ahead of time can make or break your experience. Here’s how you can avoid surprises and step onto the trail with confidence.
Track Conditions - Why It’s Crucial to Check
Even the most familiar walks can throw you a curveball.
Recent Weather Impacts: Heavy rains may cause landslides or make river crossings hazardous.
Seasonal Closures: Tracks may shut for maintenance or wildlife protection, especially in off-seasons.
Real-Time Updates: Apps like AllTrails, social media and parks websites often post user-reported issues, like fallen trees or washed-out paths.
Pro Tip: Before heading out, check the locals parks website or even given them a call—they’re your best source for the latest trail updates.

The Weather Whisperer’s Guide
The weather isn’t just about rain or shine—it can change your entire hiking experience.
Temperature Swings: Pack layers for cold mornings and warm afternoons, especially in alpine areas.
Sudden Storms: Know the signs of approaching bad weather and have a plan to shelter.
Wind Warnings: Strong gusts can make ridge hikes or tent setups tricky.
I recommend checking weather reports from multiple sources (like BOM here in Australia or weather apps such as Mountain forecast or yr.no). But here’s the kicker: always prepare for conditions to be worse than expected.
Pack for the Unexpected
Good planning means preparing for the unknown.
Bring extra water, snacks, and warm clothing—even on short hikes.
Pack a basic first-aid kit and emergency shelter in case you need to wait out a storm.
Invest in quality rain gear—nothing ruins a hike like being soaked to the bone.

My Most Memorable Lesson in Planning
A few years back, I ignored my own advice. I headed out on what I thought was a familiar track in Tasmania. Halfway through, I hit an unmarked river crossing swollen from recent rains. With no safe way across, I had to backtrack to find a dry route….. and we didn’t end up finding one so we had to head home. That day, I learned two things:
Always research updated trail conditions.
Nature has no favourites—it pays to respect the elements.
Your Checklist for Smart Planning
✅ Check recent trail updates and closures.
✅ Look at multiple weather forecasts.
✅ Prepare for the unexpected with the right gear.
The more you plan, the less you’ll need to stress on the trail. So, your future self—dry, safe, and smiling at the summit—will thank you for a little extra effort today.
